Hans R. Griem | ![]() |
Hans R. Griem received his Ph.D. from the Universität of Kiel, Germany, in 1954. He has been at the University of Maryland since 1957 and has received an honorary Ph.D. from Ruhr University in 1990.
Prof. Griem's experimental and theoretical research focuses on radiation from highly ionized atoms in high temperature plasmas. Applications include radiation losses from magnetically confined plasmas, radiative energy transport in inertially confined plasmas, and the search for short wavelength lasers. He is also conducting research on electron-ion inelastic collision processes and spectral line broadening (and shifts) in dense plasmas. His three books on plasma spectroscopy and spectral line broadening, listed on the Experiment Plasma Physics webpage, are standard references in all these research areas.
Prof. Griem is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and was awarded the APS Maxwell Prize in 1981. He is listed in several Marquis' "Who Is Who," including "Who's Who in the World."
