Henry Freund, Visiting Senior Research Scientist, received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Maryland in 1976 and is currently a Senior Research Physicist with Science Applications International Corp. where he has worked since 1979.
Dr. Freund's work in the field of FELs includes analytic investigation of the orbital stability of relativistic electron beams in the undulator magnetic fields, as well as the spontaneous and stimulated emission of radiation. He has made important contributions to both theory and simulation for FELs operating over virtually the entire spectrum. In recognition of his contributions to these fields, he has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He has published more than 140 papers in refereed journals, made numerous contributions to books and published proceedings. Dr. Freund serves on the program committee of the annual FEL conference, has organized conferences on Electron Beam Sources of High Brightness Radiation for the SPIE. He serves on the review board for the Navy's High Power Infrared Demonstration FEL Project at the Thomas Jefferson Laboratory.
