Undergraduate Research Fellowships
IREAP-URF

Application Deadline for 2008 Summer Semester is April 15, 2008

A Fellows Program for
Research in Physical Sciences and Engineering

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

As part of our education mission, the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics endeavors to enhance the preparation of students for careers in science and engineering. Toward that goal, IREAP has initiated an Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) program which seeks to broaden the education experience of undergraduate science and engineering students through direct involvement in IREAP research projects. In addition to its intrinsic educational value, the fellowship provides students a competitive edge in applying for jobs or graduate study.

IREAP-URF introduces undergraduates to the discipline and rewards of leading edge research projects. Students spend about ten hours per week during the Fall and/or Spring semesters working with an IREAP mentor. Awardees receive a stipend of $1500 for each semester. For summer projects, students spend twenty hours per week and receive a stipend of $3000 for the summer. For continuing projects a new application must be submitted for each semester or the summer.

Awardees are required to submit project reports at the end of each semester or summer. In addition, fellows may be required to present a poster or other presentation on their project during the semester following the project.

ELIGIBILITY

Undergraduate students in science, mathematics, and engineering who have completed at least 14 credit hours and have attained a minimum GPA of 3.2 are eligible to apply for IREAP Undergraduate Research Fellowships. Mentors must be IREAP teaching or research faculty (Permanent Faculty). Students may submit only one application per semester or summer.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE 2008 SUMMER SEMESTER

  1. Before applying students must find and contact an IREAP mentor directly. For a list of IREAP faculty who may have open positions see the following webpage: http://www.ireap.umd.edu/ireap/UndergradResOpp/UnderResProjects.htm.

  2. Students must submit the following application package to Asst. Prof. Edo Waks by April 15, 2008: the Student Application Form (completed by the applicant and signed and dated by the applicant and the mentor), a resume (including honors, awards, publications, etc.), and a Project Description Form (completed by the mentor and signed and dated by the mentor and the applicant).

For further information regarding the Summer 2008 semester, please contact Asst. Prof. Edo Waks at (301)405-5022, (edowaks at umd.edu). Submit applications and forms to:
